梅田望夫の紹介をみても思ったけど、日本語だけが残るべき言語なのかと思った。残るべき言語は数学だけじゃないかな。

This is a question easier for me to answer in English than Japanese but let me try in both languages. 私にとっては英語の方が答えやすい質問なのだけど、重要な質問につき両方でがんばってみることにする。

Why isn't math enough? なぜ数学だけじゃ駄目なのか。

Because math can talk only about whatever make sense. 数学では、つじつまが合うことしか語れないから。

And no one can always make sense, even mathematicians. 数学者さえ、常につじつまが合っているわけではないのだ。

Pick a phrase. "Let's learn mathematics." Can you say that in the language of math?

一例を上げる。「数学を学びましょう」。これを数学の言葉で言うことは可能か?

Whenever you 'want', you don't make sense -- at least when you start wanting it.

「欲する」というのは、つじつまが合っているからではない。少なくとも、それを欲し始めた時点においては。

In mathematics, contradiction is where conversation ends. You see that happen whenever you apply reductio ad absurdum. 数学においては、矛盾が発生した時点で会話が終わる。このことは、背理法を使ってみればわかる。

But for the rest, that is where conversation begins. しかし、他の場合においては、それこそが会話の出発点なのだ。

There are so much to make more than senses. You have to make ends meet. You have to make love. You have to make tomorrow a better place. 合わせなければならないのは、つじつまだけではないのだ。帳尻も合わせなければならない。心と体も合わせなければならない。そして、明日が今日よりも合わせやすい場所にしつづけなければならない。

There is no doubt mathematics is the language of choice where sense and consistency matters the most. つじつまと一貫性が最重要な場所において、数学が第一選択の言語であることは疑いようがない。

If we are luck to have a chance to talk to an extraterrestrial intelligence, the language we talk to them is definitely based upon mathematics. もし宇宙人と会話する機会があったら、そこで使われる言語は数学を元にしたものとなるだろう。It doesn't take Contact to see that. 「コンタクト」を読むまでもない。

But math just can't tell them why we want to talk to them. でも、なぜ彼らと話たいのか、数学で言うことはできない。

And no one learns mathematics purely in mathematics. そして、数学を純粋に数学だけで学ぶものもいない。Russell knows that only too well. 実際にこれを試みたラッセルもよくわかっているはずだ。

The world of mathematics is vast. So vast you can squeeze infinite number of infinity and still a plenty of room is left. 数学の世界は広大だ。あまりに広大で、無限の可能性を無限個詰め込んでも、まだいくらでも場所が残るほど。

Yet you cannot talk about everything we get to talk about in math. にも関わらず、語るべきことを全て数学で語ることは出来ないのだ。

Why not just math? なぜ数学だけじゃないのか?

We simply have more to talk about. 語るべきことが、多過ぎるからなのである。
